Scott’s Vintage Film Nikon Z flexible color picture control

The flexible color picture control train keeps rolling on!

Today, we have Scott’s Vintage Film, a color profile that features pastel pink midtones, hints of teal in the highlights, warm shadows, and an overall faded aesthetic. There is also a HI version that has a bit more contrast and brighter highlights for a punchier look with the same tones (better for overcast days).

At the time of writing, these are supported on the Nikon Zf, Z5ii, Z50ii, Z6iii, Z8, and ZR cameras.

Once downloaded, copy the files to your camera’s SD card. Navigate to Camera > Manage Picture Control > Load/Save to get them assigned into custom slots.

I pay attention to 4 settings when using these picture controls:

  • Active D-Lighting - set to Normal, but will move to High if an extremely high contrast scene

  • Film Grain - turned ON and set to Medium 2

  • Exposure Compensation - usually set at either +1/3 or +2/3 to offset the loss of contrast Active D-Lighting introduces.

  • White Balance - set to Cloudy or Shade during the day, but dial it back to about 6700K if you feel it’s too warm. Either Cloudy or Shady will make sunset and blue hour photos really pop.
