What’s up, Doc?
Once relegated to a scrap heap and abandoned in the Mojave Desert , this WWII bomber known simply as “Doc” is now one of only two B-29 Superfortresses that remain airworthy and flying in the world.
A relic of another time, it took decades of work to get this incredible piece of machinery back in the air, led by a force of volunteers dedicated to preserving one of the most enduring symbols of American military might against the Axis powers.
Doc now routinely tours America…you can walk around it, run your hands along the smooth skin, climb inside, make your way through the bomb bay, and even clamber up into the radio room adjacent to the cockpit. The amount of work and love of aviation history poured into this vessel is obvious.
CBS did a great story on the restoration efforts a few years ago that’s worth a watch if you’re interested in knowing more:
Info on where to see it, how to take a ride on it, or how to simply donate to keep it flying can be found at the Doc’s Friends website.
